From Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant to the Texas Amphitheater Stage: The Music Behind Almost There

Discover the celebrated Christian musicians and moving Christmas song connected to the holiday musical coming to Glen Rose this December.

Music has a remarkable ability to bring familiar stories to life in new ways. This Christmas season, Texas Amphitheater invites audiences to experience that connection through Almost There: A Christmas Musical, presented during the first three weekends of December in Glen Rose, Texas.

At the heart of the production is a musical story connected to some of the most recognizable names in contemporary Christian music, including Grammy Award-winning artists Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant.

A Christmas Song Born from a Musical Partnership

Longtime musical collaborators Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant have helped shape contemporary Christian music for decades, creating songs that have become meaningful parts of worship services, family celebrations, and Christmas traditions.

In 2014, Smith released The Spirit of Christmas, a holiday album featuring an extraordinary collection of guest artists and seasonal music.

Among the recordings was Almost There, a poignant Christmas song written by Smith, Grant, and fellow songwriter Wes King, featuring Grant's vocals alongside Smith.

Rather than recounting the Nativity solely through familiar celebrations surrounding the manger, the song approaches the Christmas story through Mary's experience as she journeys toward Bethlehem.

Its message explores the anticipation, faith, and extraordinary responsibility of a young woman preparing to welcome the Christ Child.

The result is a deeply personal perspective on one of Christianity's most cherished stories.

From a Beloved Song to a Christmas Musical

The musical presentation Almost There: A Christmas Musical, published by Brentwood Benson, expands upon the themes of Mary's journey through a collection of inspirational music and familiar Christmas melodies.

Created by Michael W. Smith, Wes King, Bradley Knight, and Luke Gambill, with arrangements and orchestration by Bradley Knight, the musical invites audiences to rediscover the Nativity through music, reflection, and storytelling.

The production centers on Mary's obedience, anticipation, and faith as she approaches Bethlehem, offering a musical interpretation of the events leading to the birth of Jesus Christ.

While the original recording featuring Smith and Grant provides a beautiful introduction to the song, the Texas Amphitheater presentation will bring the musical to audiences through its own holiday production.
